All Hallows Eve

2004

At first, I hadn't planned to make Halloween costumes. For some unknown reason (I have yet to figure out my motives), I changed my mind. I thought I was picking out simple costumes and when it came down to the wire (only 2 days remaining), I had Jasmyn's finished, but had only cut out the fabrics for the 2 boys, Cameron and Gabriel. It was late Friday night, and because I was tired, I figured I do the "King" first. It's only a tunic, right? Hah! Of the 3, it was the most difficult. I embroidered buttonhole shaped grommets knowing I had never been able to set grommets well and didn't want to mess up the shirt. I also embroidered decorative sttiching on the shirt sleeves and around the front inset in order to avoid the applique work. In fact, I'm so bad with applique work, that the crest on Cameron's shirt didn't get finished -- after breaking 3 needles and the thread consistently bunching up on the back, I gave up and hoped the wonder under would hold through the night. It did, to my great relief!

Left to Right
Gabriel, "King"
Tobias, "Explorer"
Jasmyn, "Consort"
Cameron, "Musketeer"

Jasmyn's cotume was the first time I'd
worked with anything non-cotton. It
wasn't until I'd finished the 3rd one that
I began to feel comfortable working with
all these different fabrics. Certainly has
been an interesting learning curve for me.
